Dear community members and friends in the Capital District Region of RBERN,

It is a difficult time for many reasons. The CD RBERN wants to send a reminder of hope and support. While it is not always obvious, these concerns impact our English Learners, too.

Our RBERN continues to support 149 districts and 8 charter schools in our region. We have learned alongside the educators of NYS to adapt to a time of remote learning and support. While our support is mainly in the form of professional development and coaching, we are not removed from the tragic climate that lead to violence even in our backyard of Albany, NY. When we’ve worked over the past year to support schools with the new Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Framework for NYS, its urgency is brought to light with these current events.

We stand as one. We believe in equality. There is always an opportunity for us to demonstrate compassion and being a humanitarian.

If any school/district needs support with Social Emotional Learning, the Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Framework, or even just a place to be heard, please reach out to us at the Capital District RBERN.

We are still here for you.

Message from the RBERN Director

Dear Educators and Families of our Multilingual Learners,

In these uncertain times, news changes day to day. One thing that remains the same is our unwavering support and our willingness to be figuratively by your side as we navigate these new waters together.

Many of our teachers have already asked us for support as they begin working with students entirely online for the first time. Others are beginning to rework their scope and sequence with us and considering how instructional pacing can be adjusted to end the year on track. And yet others are searching for printable resources to prepare for week two of instruction-by-mail. Families are sharing resources, work space, and bandwidth to meet objectives and expectations that didn’t even exist two weeks ago. Whatever your specific circumstances, you are not alone.

I am humbled by the efforts of our students and families for their daily commitment to ensuring that learning continues at home under these extenuating circumstances. I commend teachers for continuing to consider the diverse needs of their ELLs and the families who are at home doing their best to support them. I applaud administrators for continuing to ask for professional development, even as we all adjust to the new online format. And I am especially grateful to all of you who continue to breathe deeply and take each day one step at a time for the sake of your families, your loved ones, and your own well-being.

As circumstances required districts and schools to expedite submission of their Continuity of Education Plans, some details regarding supporting the needs of English Language Learners will need to be updated. We at RBERN are experienced in supporting the needs of educators and administrators regarding strategies for ELLs, and we are ready and willing to support you in your efforts to meet the needs of every learner in your care.

No question is silly or redundant. We look forward to hearing from you and hope to “see” you at one of our many upcoming online PD opportunities.

Take care, stay safe, and keep up the great work you are doing!
